Q. Why is there a new Cryptic Crossword?
A. The old version of the Cryptic Crossword used a technology called JAVA to create the interactive puzzle. Fewer and fewer web browsers support JAVA so many readers were having trouble displaying the crossword puzzle.
The best solution was to switch to a new (HTML5) version of the puzzle. This version of the puzzle will work seamlessly with any up-to-date browser and there’s no need to install plug-ins and configure them.
Q. Why can I no longer access the solution to today’s puzzle?
A. Our puzzle provider, Gemini Crosswords, felt that the fun and challenge of the puzzle could be better preserved by revealing the solution on the following day. This decision was made based on feedback Gemini received from crossword enthusiasts in other parts of the world where the Cryptic Crossword is licensed online.
Q. Why is the archive now limited to one week?
A.The archive was reduced to one week out of respect for our crossword authors’ rights in their creative work and to reduce possible over-exposure of clues or puzzles.
Q. Will The Globe and Mail be changing back to the old Cryptic Crossword?
A. The Globe and Mail will not go back to the old puzzle. The old version relied on a technology that is falling out of favour with browser makers (Chrome, Firefox, IE, Microsoft Edge, etc.) and we found that fewer and fewer people could easily enjoy the puzzle.
The new version will work seamlessly on any up-to-date desktop and mobile browser.
